Thomas Built Innovation: Introducing the NEW Detroit Diesel engines

By Matt Kalbfell | NW Pennsylvania Thomas Built Buses Salesman

Thomas Built Buses continues to be the industry leader in innovation with the introduction of the Detroit Diesel engine in our Saf-T-Liner C2, and Saf-T-Liner HDX school buses. The DD5 will be available in the C2 and the DD8 will be available in the HDX. These engines were adapted for medium duty and Thomas Built Buses, including the aftertreatment system, which is built for stop and go applications. The DD5 is a 5.1L inline 4 cylinder, while the DD5 is a 7.7L inline 6 cylinder.

The new DD5

Technical specifications aside, what does this new engine choice mean for you? It means that you can expect excellent fuel economy, efficiency, and reliability. These engines have both been running in Europe for five years already and results have been impressive.

The most impressive part may be the service intervals on the new Detroit Diesel engines. Believe it or not, both engines have up to 45,000 mile oil and fuel filter change intervals. With those longer intervals, you can spend your time on everything else that you have to get done and not worry about constantly changing the oil and fuel filters.

To me, the most groundbreaking aspect of these new engines is the Detroit Connect Virtual Technician remote diagnostic service. This service, which will be standard on all new DD5 and DD8 engines, provides real-time data to fleet managers. When a fault code is triggered, the fleet manager is notified. An alert is also sent to the Detroit Customer Support Center, who can provide details about the fault and guidance on what the next step should be. This revolutionary feature will decrease your bus’s downtime and all the headaches that come with it.

We are all very excited about this new engine choice that is now available for order. For more information or to add Detroit Diesel to your fleet, give me a call!
